Medication Support Boundaries
Medication Reminders vs Medication Administration
A medication reminder prompts a participant to take their own medicine, while medication administration generally involves greater worker responsibility for giving or managing it. The boundary can change with the task, medicine, participant's abilities and written plan, so it must be agreed before support starts. Valencea provides reminders and basic non-clinical assistance only. It does not provide injections, clinical medication management, nursing care or high-intensity supports.

What a reminder may look like
A reminder may be a verbal prompt, pointing to an agreed schedule or helping the participant remember the next step while the participant remains responsible for taking the medicine. Exact arrangements should be documented.
Medication support must be agreed clearly before a shift begins. The words reminder, prompting, assistance and administration can describe very different levels of responsibility. The participant's abilities, the medicine, the written instructions, risk and the worker's training all affect what is appropriate. A support worker is not a substitute for a pharmacist, GP or nurse. The arrangement should also explain what happens if medicine is refused, missed, unavailable, damaged or appears different from the current instructions. Workers should not diagnose, change a dose or improvise. When there is uncertainty or a health concern, follow the authorised escalation plan and contact the appropriate health professional or emergency service.
Basic assistance is not clinical management
Basic help might involve practical support around an established routine, but it should never quietly expand into selecting doses, making clinical decisions or changing instructions.
Valencea's published scope is limited to reminders and basic non-clinical assistance. Valencea does not provide injections, clinical medication management, nursing care or high-intensity supports. If the required task goes beyond that boundary, say so during the enquiry so an appropriately qualified service can be arranged instead. Put the agreed wording into the service information so the participant, family and worker understand the same limits. Review it whenever medication, packaging, instructions, capacity or health needs change. A clear refusal is safer than allowing a non-clinical service to drift into a task that requires clinical assessment, delegation or specialist competence.
- Confirm the participant remains in control
- Use current written instructions
- Agree what the worker may touch or record
- Escalate questions to the appropriate health professional
What medication administration can involve
Administration may involve preparing, selecting or giving medicine and accepting a higher level of responsibility. Some medication tasks may be clinical or high intensity and require specific assessment, training, delegation or qualified health professionals.
