Personal Care Support: What to Expect

Pubblicato 9 settembre 2026

Personal care support is assistance with private daily routines such as hygiene, dressing, grooming or getting ready for the day, depending on the participant's needs and agreed service. The worker should explain each step, seek consent, protect privacy and provide only the level of help wanted. Valencea offers non-clinical personal care but does not provide nursing, high-intensity or clinical support.

Agree on the routine before the first shift

Discuss which tasks are included, the preferred order, products, equipment, timing, communication and any gender or cultural preferences. The participant should decide who receives this information.

Daily support should be built around the person's usual way of doing things. The aim is not to take over automatically. Depending on the agreed service, a worker may provide a prompt, set up an activity, work alongside the participant or provide direct assistance while respecting privacy and choice. The right level of help can change from task to task. Ask what the participant wants to do independently and where help is useful. A slower pace, visual steps, fewer instructions or a predictable order may be more effective than completing the task quickly. Success should be defined by the participant's comfort, goals and real-life routine, not by making every shift look identical.

Consent applies throughout the shift

Agreement to receive personal care is not blanket consent to every action. Workers should ask before touching, moving clothing, entering private spaces or changing the usual routine.

Before support starts, agree on the tasks, timing, access arrangements, products or equipment, boundaries and what should happen if plans change. Review the arrangement once the worker has seen the routine in real life. Small adjustments—such as the order of tasks, how instructions are given or when breaks happen—can make support more useful and comfortable. Confirm which costs are ordinary personal expenses and which part is the paid support service. Keep the scope realistic for the available shift time, and decide priorities rather than rushing. If a task becomes unsafe or begins to require clinical judgment, stop and seek the appropriate qualified service instead of stretching the original agreement.

  • Explain before assisting
  • Offer manageable choices
  • Pause when consent is withdrawn
  • Protect doors, towels and personal space

Independence and dignity can work together

Support may mean setting up items, giving a prompt, assisting with one difficult step or providing more direct help. The worker should not take over tasks the participant wants to do.

Recognise clinical boundaries

Skin concerns, wounds, injections, clinical monitoring or other health tasks may require a nurse or appropriately qualified provider. Valencea does not provide clinical or high-intensity care.
