Getting started with the NDIS
Self-managed vs plan-managed vs agency-managed: which is right for you?
The NDIS offers three ways to manage plan funding, and the right choice depends on how much administrative effort a participant or family wants to take on, versus how much flexibility and provider choice matters to them. None of the three is universally 'better' — it's a genuine trade-off, and many families change their choice over time as circumstances change.

Self-managed
With self-management, the participant or their nominee pays providers directly and claims reimbursement from the NDIS, keeping their own records. This gives the most flexibility — including being able to use unregistered providers — but comes with the most administrative responsibility: paying invoices, keeping records and tracking budgets.
This option tends to suit families who are comfortable with paperwork, want maximum choice over exactly who they work with, and have the time and organisational capacity to manage claims and records reliably.
Plan-managed
A plan manager, funded separately within the plan, handles paying providers and tracking the budget on the participant's behalf. This keeps most of the flexibility of self-management — including being able to use unregistered providers — while removing the bulk of the paperwork. This is why many families choose plan management as a middle ground.
Because the plan manager's fee comes from separate NDIS funding rather than reducing the participant's other support budgets, plan management is often described as 'the best of both worlds' for families who want flexibility without the admin load.
A good plan manager will also flag budget issues before they become urgent — for example, letting a family know a category is being spent down faster than expected, well ahead of the next scheduled review. This kind of proactive communication varies between plan managers, so it's worth asking directly about it when choosing one.
Agency-managed (NDIA-managed)
With agency management, the NDIA pays providers directly and the participant has no admin burden at all — but funding can only be used with NDIS-registered providers, which significantly narrows provider choice. This suits some families well, particularly those who prefer not to handle any paperwork, but it does rule out unregistered providers entirely.
- Self-managed: most flexibility and provider choice, most admin, can use unregistered providers
- Plan-managed: broad flexibility and provider choice with a plan manager handling paperwork, can use unregistered providers
- Agency-managed: no admin burden, but limited to NDIS-registered providers only
A common question: which one do most families actually choose?
There's no single right answer, and the popularity of each option shifts as families' circumstances change over time. Some start agency-managed because it feels simplest when everything is new, then move to plan-managed once they want more choice over providers. Others start self-managed because they want full control from day one, then bring in a plan manager later if the admin becomes too time-consuming alongside everything else going on.
It's worth thinking of this less as a permanent identity and more as a setting that can be revisited. If your current management type isn't working — too much admin, too little provider choice, or anything in between — raising a change at the next plan review is a normal, reasonable thing to do, not a sign that the original choice was wrong.
A practical next step
Valencea is an unregistered NDIS provider, so we can be engaged by self-managed or plan-managed participants, but not by agency-managed (NDIA-managed) funding. If you're not yet sure which management type suits you, this is worth discussing at your next planning meeting — and if you're plan-managed or self-managed and want to talk about support in Western Sydney, call 0494 733 201, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Can I mix management types across different funding categories?
Yes, it's possible to have different categories managed differently within the same plan — for example, plan-managed for some supports and agency-managed for others.
Which type works with Valencea?
