Choosing and Working With Support Workers

Can I Change My NDIS Support Worker?

发布于 2026年9月9日

Yes. You can ask to change your NDIS support worker if the relationship is not a good fit. You do not need to wait for a serious incident. Communication style, reliability, boundaries, cultural fit or the way support is delivered may be enough to request a different match. Check your service agreement for notice and cancellation terms, explain what is not working, and ask the provider how support can continue during the change.

A poor fit is a valid concern

Not every mismatch means a worker has behaved badly. Sometimes two people simply communicate differently, or the worker's availability, pace or approach does not suit the participant's routine and goals.

A good support arrangement should make your day feel more predictable, not more complicated. Your preferences, communication style, routines, culture, privacy and goals all matter. A worker can have experience and still be the wrong fit for a particular person. It is reasonable to ask questions, take time to decide and explain what helps you feel comfortable. Where possible, direct questions to the participant and give them time to answer in their preferred way. Family or trusted people can contribute when invited, but support should not quietly shift control away from the person receiving it. Clear expectations at the beginning make later feedback easier and fairer for everyone.

Raise immediate safety concerns quickly

If you feel unsafe, pressured, disrespected or believe the NDIS Code of Conduct may have been breached, prioritise safety and contact the provider promptly. In an emergency, use emergency services rather than waiting for a routine complaint process.

Write down the practical details before you speak with a provider: the tasks you want help with, preferred days and times, transport needs, communication preferences, boundaries and anything that may affect safety. This creates a clearer brief for matching. It also gives you something concrete to review after the first few shifts instead of relying only on a general first impression. Ask how changes, delays and cancellations will be communicated, and check the service agreement before signing. If an arrangement is not working, describe the specific impact and the change you want. You can be respectful and still be firm about choice, dignity, safety and reliability.

  • Record the date and what happened
  • Separate facts from assumptions
  • State what outcome you want
  • Keep relevant messages or shift notes

Ask for a practical transition plan

Changing workers can interrupt routines, so ask who will cover upcoming shifts, what information will be passed to the new worker and whether another meet and greet is available. Only necessary support information should be shared.

Learn from the mismatch

Use the experience to make the next match more specific. Explain what worked, what did not, and which needs are essential rather than optional.

FAQ

Do I need to give a reason?

A brief, honest explanation helps the provider improve the next match, but you should not be pressured to continue an arrangement that feels unsuitable. Ask the provider to confirm how this applies to your proposed worker and service agreement.

Will changing workers affect my NDIS plan?

Changing an individual worker does not itself change your plan. Funding use still needs to follow your plan and service agreement.

What if I am self-managed?

You have choice over who you engage, subject to your agreement and applicable obligations. Review notice, payment and cancellation terms before ending the arrangement.

Can Valencea arrange another meet and greet?

Valencea offers a free meet and greet before commitment; availability of another suitable worker must be confirmed at the time. Ask the provider to confirm how this applies to your proposed worker and service agreement.
