Choosing and Working With Support Workers

What NDIS Support Workers Can and Cannot Do

发布于 2026年9月9日

NDIS support workers can help with agreed everyday activities such as personal care, household tasks, community access, social activities and transport. They must work within the service agreement, their competence, the participant's choices and the NDIS Code of Conduct. They should not take control of a person's money or decisions, ignore consent, provide tasks outside their competence, or act as a clinician when they are not qualified and engaged to do so.

What support may include

The exact role depends on the participant's goals and the agreed service. A worker may assist with routines, hygiene, dressing, meal-related tasks, cleaning, shopping, appointments, transport or taking part in the community.

A good support arrangement should make your day feel more predictable, not more complicated. Your preferences, communication style, routines, culture, privacy and goals all matter. A worker can have experience and still be the wrong fit for a particular person. It is reasonable to ask questions, take time to decide and explain what helps you feel comfortable. Where possible, direct questions to the participant and give them time to answer in their preferred way. Family or trusted people can contribute when invited, but support should not quietly shift control away from the person receiving it. Clear expectations at the beginning make later feedback easier and fairer for everyone.

  • Assistance with daily living
  • Personal care within agreed scope
  • Cleaning, laundry and household help
  • Community and social participation
  • Transport assistance

Consent, dignity and privacy always matter

A support worker should explain what they are doing, seek consent and respect a participant's right to pause or refuse. Personal information should be handled carefully and discussed only for legitimate support purposes.

Write down the practical details before you speak with a provider: the tasks you want help with, preferred days and times, transport needs, communication preferences, boundaries and anything that may affect safety. This creates a clearer brief for matching. It also gives you something concrete to review after the first few shifts instead of relying only on a general first impression. Ask how changes, delays and cancellations will be communicated, and check the service agreement before signing. If an arrangement is not working, describe the specific impact and the change you want. You can be respectful and still be firm about choice, dignity, safety and reliability.

Boundaries protect everyone

Workers should not borrow money, use a participant's property for personal benefit, create inappropriate personal or romantic relationships, or pressure a participant into purchases, gifts or decisions. Clear boundaries do not make support cold; they make it safer.

FAQ

Yes, when personal care is agreed, within scope and delivered with consent, privacy and respect. Ask the provider to confirm how this applies to your proposed worker and service agreement.

Can a worker make decisions for me?

No. A worker can help you understand options or carry out your choices, but should not replace your decision-making authority.

Can Valencea administer injections?

No. Valencea does not provide injections, clinical medication management, nursing or high-intensity supports.

Who does the NDIS Code of Conduct apply to?

The Code applies broadly to NDIS providers and workers, including unregistered providers and their workers. Ask the provider to confirm how this applies to your proposed worker and service agreement.
