NDIS Support Coordinator vs plan manager: what's the difference?

A Support Coordinator helps a participant understand their plan, connect with suitable providers, build skills to manage their own supports over time, and navigate the broader service system. There are different levels of support coordination, depending on complexity of need, and this funding is included in a plan only if the NDIA has assessed it as reasonable and necessary.

A Plan Manager receives invoices from providers, pays them from the participant's NDIS funding, and keeps track of what's been spent against the budget. This is purely financial administration — a Plan Manager doesn't typically help find providers or coordinate services, though many communicate helpfully about budget tracking.

Plan Manager funding is generally provided at no extra cost against a participant's other support budgets — it sits in its own separate category, which is one reason many families choose to include one even when they're otherwise comfortable managing most things themselves.

It can help to picture the two problems separately: one is the effort of researching, comparing and coordinating services; the other is the ongoing admin of paying for them correctly. Some families are genuinely fine with one and struggling with the other, which is exactly why the two roles exist as separate, combinable options rather than a single bundled service.

Part of the problem is that both roles have 'plan' or 'support' somewhere in the title, and both are generally arranged around the same time — when a plan first includes funded supports. It's genuinely easy for a new participant to come away from their first planning meeting unsure which professional does what, especially if both were mentioned in the same conversation.

A simple way to keep the distinction straight: a Support Coordinator answers the question 'what should I do, and who should I use?' A Plan Manager answers the question 'how does the money actually get paid?' If a question you have is really about finding the right service, that's coordination. If it's about an invoice, a budget balance, or a payment that hasn't gone through, that's plan management. When in doubt, it rarely hurts to ask either professional directly — most are used to clarifying this distinction for new participants.
