NDIS transport allowance vs support worker transport: what's the difference?

Published August 15, 2026Last reviewed 15 August 2026

Two different things that share the word "transport"

It's a common point of confusion: your NDIS plan can involve transport-related funding in two quite different ways, and they're not interchangeable. One is your own transport funding, sitting in the Transport sub-category of your Core Supports budget. The other is a provider's cost of transporting or accompanying you as part of delivering a different support altogether — for example, a support worker who drives you to a medical appointment and stays to support you there.

Your personal transport funding

This is the recurring amount assessed for you individually, based on your travel needs (see our full explainer on how transport funding levels are worked out). It's yours to use flexibly for getting around — taxis, ride-share, community transport, running a car — connected to your disability and your goals.

A support worker's travel as part of delivering a support

When a support worker travels to reach you, or transports you somewhere as part of delivering a different funded support (like community access or an appointment), that travel is generally treated as part of the cost of delivering that support itself — claimed under the relevant support item, following the NDIS's own pricing rules for provider travel — rather than drawn from your separate personal transport funding line.

The mechanism here has moving parts — things like how far a support worker needs to travel, and how that's factored into what's charged — that are set out in the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (the Price Guide), which is updated periodically. We're deliberately not quoting specific rates, caps or time limits here, since the current published figures are the only accurate source and we'd rather point you to them than risk repeating an outdated number.

Why the distinction matters

Mixing the two up can cause confusion when you're checking your plan spending — a charge related to a support worker's travel while delivering a support shouldn't be showing up against your personal Transport budget line, and vice versa. If something in your statements doesn't look right, it's worth asking your provider or plan manager which of the two it relates to, rather than assuming.

It also matters when you're comparing providers: ask directly how they handle their own travel costs when supporting you out in the community, since practices can vary within what the Price Guide allows.

How Valencea handles this

We're upfront with participants about how our own travel is arranged and charged when we're supporting you out in the community, separate from any personal transport funding you hold. If you're ever unsure which is which on your statement, ask your day-to-day contact and we'll walk you through it.

FAQ

Does a support worker's travel time come out of my personal transport funding?

Generally, no. A provider's travel costs while delivering a support are usually claimed as part of that support itself, under the NDIS's provider travel pricing rules — separate from your own personal Transport budget line.

Why does my statement show two different kinds of transport-related charges?

One is likely your own personal transport funding being drawn down for your travel; the other may be a provider's travel cost associated with delivering a different support. If it's unclear, ask your provider or plan manager to point out which is which.

Can I choose not to pay for a support worker's travel costs?

Provider travel is generally something you agree to upfront as part of your service agreement, in line with NDIS pricing rules — it's worth asking any provider how they handle it before you start, so there are no surprises later.

Where can I check the exact current rules for provider travel claims?

The NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits document (the Price Guide) on ndis.gov.au is the authoritative, current source — it's updated periodically, so always check the latest version rather than relying on an older summary.
