Community participation
Volunteering Opportunities for NDIS Participants
Volunteering can help an NDIS participant contribute skills, meet people, build routine and explore interests. The right role should be genuinely voluntary, safe, accessible and chosen by the participant. NDIS funding may support disability-related assistance needed to find, learn or attend a volunteer role, but it does not turn an unpaid role into paid employment or automatically cover ordinary personal costs.

Choose a role with real meaning
Think about causes, tasks and environments the participant values. Options may include community gardens, animal welfare, events, libraries, neighbourhood groups, arts, faith communities or remote administrative tasks, depending on local opportunities.
Community participation should be built around the participant's interests, comfort and goals, not a provider's standard activity list. It can be quiet or social, structured or flexible. Success might mean attending for ten minutes, speaking to one person, learning a route, joining regularly, or deciding that an activity is not the right fit.
The written service agreement should match the conversation. It should identify the support, schedule, price approach, responsibilities, cancellation terms, privacy arrangements and a way to raise concerns. Read it before signing and ask for changes if the wording does not reflect the participant’s choices. Keep a copy and compare early invoices and shift notes with what was agreed.
Check the role and organisation
Ask for a clear task description, hours, supervision, accessibility, safety procedures, insurance and a contact person. Confirm whether screening, training or references are required and whether a support worker can attend.
A support worker can help with planning, travel, communication, confidence, personal support and participation when these tasks are within the agreed service. The worker should not pressure someone to socialise or choose activities for them. Consent, dignity of risk and the participant's right to change their mind remain central.
Support should be reviewed after it has been experienced in real life. Ask the participant what felt comfortable, what was confusing, whether the worker gave enough time, and what should change next time. Feedback does not need to wait for a serious complaint. Small adjustments to timing, prompts, communication or worker approach can make the service more useful and respectful.
- Confirm the support is connected to the participant’s plan, goals and disability-related needs.
- Ask what is included, what is a personal cost, and how cancellations or changes are handled.
- Record preferences, consent, risks and communication needs in the service agreement.
- Review the arrangement with the participant after support has begun.
How NDIS support may help
Eligible support could include researching roles, preparing for an interview, learning the route, understanding tasks, communicating with supervisors or receiving personal assistance during a shift. The organisation remains responsible for managing the volunteer role.
NDIS funding generally focuses on disability-related support needed to participate, rather than paying ordinary costs that everyone would usually pay. Entry fees, meals, memberships, equipment and transport need to be discussed separately. Check the plan and written agreement before assuming a particular expense can be claimed.
When circumstances are complex, separate the questions. First ask whether the participant needs the support because of disability. Then check whether the current plan includes an appropriate budget, whether the provider can lawfully and safely deliver it, and what personal costs remain. This sequence reduces misunderstandings and avoids treating a provider’s availability as proof that the NDIS will fund the service.
Avoid exploitation and unclear expectations
Volunteering should not replace a paid job where the work would normally be paid, and the participant should not be pressured to continue. Keep boundaries clear about duties, hours, expenses and who to contact if something feels unsafe or unfair.
Community participation should be built around the participant's interests, comfort and goals, not a provider's standard activity list. It can be quiet or social, structured or flexible. Success might mean attending for ten minutes, speaking to one person, learning a route, joining regularly, or deciding that an activity is not the right fit.
Preferences may change after the participant tries the support. A good arrangement leaves room to adjust the time, task, communication method or worker match. The participant can ask questions, decline an approach or request a review without being treated as difficult.
A practical next step
If you are self-managed or plan-managed and would like to discuss this type of support in Western Sydney, you can contact Valencea on 0494 733 201, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm. Valencea responds to enquiries within 24 hours and offers a free Meet and Greet before any commitment. Suitable support typically begins within 2–5 business days, depending on availability, location, support needs and worker fit. There is no pressure to proceed. If Valencea’s scope or registration status does not suit your needs, the team will say so clearly.
Before making a decision, ask the participant what would make the arrangement feel useful, respectful and predictable. Write down the answer in plain language, share it only with the people who need it, and use it as a practical check when the service is reviewed.
FAQ
Can I volunteer while receiving the Disability Support Pension?
Volunteering and income-support rules are separate from NDIS rules. Check current Services Australia guidance for your circumstances.
Will the NDIS pay me to volunteer?
No. NDIS funding may cover eligible disability-related support, not wages for volunteering.
Can my support worker volunteer for the organisation too?
The worker’s role should remain clear and focused on the participant’s agreed support. Any separate volunteering arrangement would need to avoid conflicts and be approved appropriately.
Can Valencea support me at a volunteer role?
Valencea can discuss eligible community participation or transport support for self-managed and plan-managed participants, depending on the role, plan and worker availability.
