Understanding your NDIS plan categories

Published June 1, 2026Updated August 10, 2026Last reviewed 10 August 2026

Your NDIS plan is usually split into three types of budget: Core Supports, Capacity Building Supports, and Capital Supports.

Core Supports are the most flexible — they cover everyday help like personal care, community access and consumables, and funding can generally move between these categories as your needs change.

Capacity Building Supports are designed to help you build skills and independence over time, such as support coordination, therapy or employment support — this funding is usually tied to its specific purpose and can't be moved to other categories.

Capital Supports fund one-off, higher-cost items like assistive technology or home modifications.

If you're ever unsure which category a support falls under, your support coordinator or our team can help you check before you book anything.
